We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day for our annual, world famous curling tournament at the Playground of the Gods – blue skies, no wind, and the sun couldn’t have shined any brighter! The teams gathered on the tarn around 12pm, a little later than planned as the helicopter, which was transporting a few teams up to the tarn, was ironically fogged in at the Rangiora airport.
The curling kicked off once the heli landed and quickly laughter and trash-talk banter could be heard throughout the mountain. Teams who were waiting their turn on the rink enjoyed a delicious, handmade burger from Chef Lloyd, which were delivered straight up to the tarn – all in one piece! They went down a treat!
Slowly, one by one, teams were eliminated until the final two teams went head to head in the championship – just as well as the sun had just decided to dip below the horizon for the day and the temperatures started dropping quickly. It was a hard fought battle, but in the end the team of Andy, Beau, Grace and Sarah (with Macca stepping up when injured happened!) took home the glory and won the curling competition!
The day wrapped up with the helicopter shuttling people back down and a number of people stayed around on the tarn, reminiscing on the wonderful day everyone had just had, some with slightly sunburned faces. The remaining folks began to ski back down to the Top Hut as the sun finally set, where a delicious dinner (again, by our wonderful Chef Lloyd) awaited them.
We can’t wait to host the curling again next winter, so be sure to put this wonderful weekend on your calendar for 2025!
A big shoutout to the Meg Morton for her Officiating Skills on the ice, and the Mt Olympus Staff team who, although didn’t win, kept the mountain running smoothly all day for skiers, snowboarders, and curlers with it being one of the busiest days in Mt Olympus history!
Fun fact: Did you know a curling stone weighs 20kgs??
